Shit Happens (but life must go on)
We are both quite different, personality wise and the years apart had accentuated our differences in religious persuasions, interests and other pursuits but despite this, our friendship had stood the test of time and we had remained good and sincere friends.
And so I was quite distressed to learn that he was recently involved in a horrific bus accident in Iran while on the way to the airport last month. He was part of a consortium doing some projects there. Emergency surgeries were preformed there to stabilize his condition before he was evacuated for further medical attention at Gleneagles Intan Medical Center in KL where he received further surgery to his left arm. To put it mildly he was pretty much smashed up with broken thigh bones, arms, jaw and about half of his teeth had also been knocked off. He was lucky to be alive.
I flew to KL to see him and to see how I can help. He was so glad to see me and I have to hold back my tears to see him like this. His wife has to fight back her tears too when she recapped her traumatic experience of the past over 2 weeks of learning about the accident, her flight there with their eldest son (who flew back from Perth) to bring AL back. She was grateful for the help of her church friends and that though AL had previously bought travel and medical insurances it was just recently that he had upgraded it to include travel to Iran. It was God's grace she said.
He has only just been able to take solid food in the past 2 days and receiving daily physiotherapy. Luckily the worst is now over and AL is in good spirits and firmly focused on his recovery which understandably considering the injuries, would take a while.
AL thought that the visitors must be pulling his legs when they told him that you get a wonderful view of KL skyline from the window - and so I took this photo to show him.
Yeah, shit happens; but life must go on. You all take care you hear.

NOTE: I do not want to identify AL at the request of his wife as AL being the youngest and favourite in the family does not want his ailing mother to know of his condition as her health is quite frail and she might not be able to handle the shock of learning this. AL will let her know when he has recovered enough to be able to let her know himself. I trust my friends who is able to identify AL from my post would do the decent thing and respect their wishes.

I wish AL a speedy recovery and it is really good he and his family receives support from friends like you. :-)
Hi Francis,
Can't tell whether I know AL or not from your pics. If I do know him, please let me know whether it is appropriate for me to visit with him. I don't to encroach on his privacy, so do advise, please.
Reagrds, Jack
kho - AL was in Room 516 at Gleneagles Intan but since his condition has stabilised somewhat he could have gone back to Kuching by this week as when I was there the Surgeon pop in and while chatting with AL hinted that the insurance company would like him to have his rehabilitation in Kuching. Gleneagles is a 5-stars hospital.
AL is his initial and initial of his chinese name is LYK. Call me if u still cant guess his identity. 013-8119669.
Wishing AL a speedy recovery & back with his family & friends in Kuching.
Tried to contact AL via hp but to no avail. fh2o said he cld hv chked out. NEway, m praying fr his speedy recovery. Sori I did not mnged to meet him in KL.
Fact is, in tandem, my 19-yr-old agent was diagnosed wt recurrent cancer which spread frm his knee to the thigh, and to the lungs. All in a span of just 1 yr.
I m doing my level best to lift his fighting spirit n I believe he will overcome. Can u believe he is still talking insurance inbetween chemos? Hope u guys can help pray fr his recovery.TQ
P/S: So, AL, pick up ur spirit & get well soon!
We'll pray for both AL and Ricky's friend's speedy recovery. With God all things are possible!
I wish AL a speedy recovery too. I think I know who he is, I probably sat opposite him while tucking in at the Fat Cat laksa stall.
BTW, fr the benefits of all our frens, insurance companies hv no rights to ask Insured to move to another hospital (as in AL's case)if the Insured decided otherwise.
This is the usual scenario when one is admitted to a Panel Hospital (i.e. one that is listed with the Ins Co.):
1)Upon registratn at the Hospital, the latter will check with the Ins Co on the validity of the Insured policy(i.e. no premium oustanding/policy in force).
2)If policy is in force, the Dr on duty will attend to the Insured and write his findings.
3)The Hosp will fax Dr's findings to Ins Co for confirmation of coverage within the policy. If oked, the Insured will be admitted/warded.
4)Steps 2 n 3 may take 2-3 hrs or longer. So, pls stay cool while waiting for "clearance" n GL to be issued by Ins Co to the Hosp.
5)With the GL issued, Ins Co is comitted to pay the respective Hosp's/Drs'/Specialists'charges n fees involved provided the sum insured for Hosp n Surgery (H&S) services is not exceeded. NVtheless, the Insured will be liable for any exceeding amount and/ or the co-insurance amount(this is the "excess" similar to motor insurance where the Insured needs to pay a percentage of the repair cost e.g. 10% or Rm1,000).
6)Upon discharge, Ins Co will pay Hosp direct whilst the Insured pays whatever the balance(if sum insured is exceeded).
So, since the Ins Co is only comitted to pay its portion of the bills, there is no valid reason whatsoever to ask the Insured to move to another hosp.
However, the Hosp (NOT ins co) may ask the Insured to discharge if the latter (not referring to AL, of course)is unable/refuses to pay the balance amount.
So, there u r! Know ur rights, eh
Ricky, thanks for the detailed explanation of the insurance co. procedures and our rights. What if there's a life & death decision? Does one have to wait for 2-3 hours to get medical attention, still? I dread to go to emergency because every time I do there's always a very long wait.
FYI - AL is now back in Kuching and getting medical attention at Kuching Specialist Hospital.
Thanks for the update.Do keep us posted of his progress.I think I know who he is.When you see him again, let him know we'll pray for his speedy recovery.
Hi, Apa Itu.
Ur qestion is expected. Let me answer ur questn wt a questn: In a life threatening situatn, wld the patient wait fr ins co's approval b4 admission? Nope, rt?
Check him first n sort out ins matters later. Call ur ins agent n let him do the running. Afterall, he is the "expert" and he earns commission, rt?
NEway, if ur agent "disappear", u can always call me fr friendly advice: 012-3330646 (on 24/7).
P/S: as fr the long queue at EW, I believe those wt ins covers shld be preferred by the panel hosps bcoz payment is guaranteed.
.. so that's why there's a long wait in emergency.. queue jumping by those with insurance :-)
Thought ER is suppose to treat patients according to severity of injury.. or maybe not..
Unfortunately I gathered from AL's brother that he had to undergo another surgery to his leg in Kuching. That's why he's still in hospital in Kuching. So he really does need our prayers in this trying time for him. I'll convey all your good wishes for his speedy recovery when I visit him either tomorrow or saturday.
Great to see all these friendliness spreading and going round, and I wish AL speedy recovery. Have been out off action abit myself through various ailments, on the way to full recovery. Hope to see you soon.
JK, we wish you well too.
JK, glad to know that you are recovering well. take care
JK, now I u/dstand why it's rather difficult to get an apptmt to meet up wt u (think v failed twice/thrice?). Sori 2know d reason, but glad u r doing fine.
AL, don't quite know what else 2 say save v continue 2pray fr ur speedy recovery.
TQ mesa fr ur prayer. My agent just took his 2nd chemo today. The cancer seems aggressive n caused his thigh 2swell up twice the size when I visited y'day.Dr says he can only op after 3rd chemo. Then the lungs will get laser treatmt.
Mnged to cheer him up a bit tis aftn, as he swings his mood after chemo.
Hope all these "mishaps" (suffered by JK, AL n my agent)will simply blow away!
Oh, mesa, abt the preferential treatmt. Wonder why ppl buy insurance? Hehe
P/S: don't quote me, ok?
I am so sorry to learn of AL's accident. He is also a very good friend of mine and the last time I met him was at his new home last year. LIfe is unpredictable and the blow can be a hard one. I hear from Anthony Bong that he is strong in his faith in God and remains composed and cheerful despite his calamity. Hold your head up, AL and be a living testimony that good will come out of all these.
