Buah Talap

During our kayak outing with Francis Ho recently we met one of the natives carrying rambutan and "buah talap" . I was quite surprised to hear that Francis had never seen or eaten buah talap before . The ones we saw were quite small and probably not ripe and i promise Francis that I will take some photos of the fruit and put on the blog if/when the opportunity arise. Apparently the buah talap are hard to come by nowadays in Kuching . My brother happened to come across them while out in the 10th mile area and bought a couple.
For the benefit of those who have not seen/eaten one .... the fruit is about the size of a coconut. Opening the outer layer of the fruit reveals the edible part of the fruit . Not sure how to describe the taste ... it is sweet with its own fragrance and divine. Maybe others in this group might be able to describe the taste a bit more .

Haha! I had since sought out, given some by the locals at a kayaking trip and TASTED 'em!

DELICIOUS - delicate sweet subtle taste in the vein of chempadak as Edmund rightly put. love it!

It's buah TERAP as the bidayuhs at Kg Bawang/Git who gave them to me called them. They plucked 'em while still on the trees as once they ripen, they fall and smashed to smithereens as the outer shell is soft - unlike durians.

Thanks for posting on this Tiong Kiat!

I love this fruit, but in all the years that I've been back, I've not been able to find it. Smelt it once in the 'veg market' and went to the fruit stall, but nothing there. Followed my nose round the market, but lost the scent at some point. Some people call it the Queen of the fruits.

the borneo bulletin calls it buah tarap: http://www.brudirect.com/DailyInfo/News/Archive/Sept03/030903/bb13.htm

what does the borneo bulletin know anyway? and who reads the borneo bulletin anyway? ;o)
hehee

but seriously they cannot even tell a jackfruit from a buah terap! they are distinctively different fruits for goodness sake! jackfruits are common but buah teraps are not that common nor easy to find - just ask Tiong Kiat!
