The Sarawak Club - Burnt Down This Morning

I don't normally drive through the area but I did this morning and there was a traffic jam as the police had blocked the roads leading to the Civic Center and I wondered what happened. On the way back from the other side, I then noticed from the distance that tragically, The Sarawak Club has been burnt down. The roofs are all gone leaving only the walls ...
It was not in the papers this morning but we would no doubt read about it in the papers tomorrow morning. Just thought I'll share this with our classmates who are not in Kuching. So a historical 130-year old institution is now nothing but charcoal and ashes ...

Here are some photos from numerous sources of the before and aftermath of the fire.

Foody Goody

On the laksa trail - Chong Choon/Poh Lam

What is this tree called?

Clues: Located in the grounds of Hotel del Coronado, San Diego. Featured in Marilyn Monroe's film 'Some like it hot'. The cameramen apparently cut off some limbs and the tree punished them with red sap!

This is an amazing bouganvillea tree/bush that is growing in the famous courtyard at the Hotel del Coronado near San Diego

Wouldn't you rather be sailing?

View from the Sheraton, San Diego

and now a word from your friendly administrator ...

Geese @ Kg Tringgus

For those of you who'd not received their invitations to join this blog as contributors - please accept my apologies (and lousy excuse!); I'll get round to it soon enough. Perhaps you can drop me a line via email francish2o@gmail.com or leave a message at the 'chatbox'.

I'm also exploring other blogging platforms that has 'security measures' in place by way of requirement for username and password to log in. Blogger which we are using now is the most popular and user friendly blog to use. But it does not have this feature. Some of the other blogging platforms may have but they are really not that user friendly. So it is a trade off. I personally prefer user-friendliness as my life is quite full and busy as it is and who has time to learn things that does seem to go with the natural flow of how human think.

I had been blogging for slightly over a year now and so far I'd never really had any problems whatsoever despite my name, vocation, handphone number, email, etc being in the public domain! So I really do not feel that it is really an issue.

When my blog started becoming "femes" or well known; I did received some nasty remarks in my chatbox about my "shady past" and other crap. You cannot stop jealous people or those with malicious intent. However on the other hand I had received numerous kind and heartwarming emails from people all over the world who enjoyed my photos, thoughts and experience. Sadly there are not enough positive bogs out there.

We would appreciate your comments on how "private" and "secure" we want our blog to be. So let's hear it!

Meow!

I second fh2o to the post of administrator. There, it is now official. Do you need a Burger king 'crown'?

With IE (Internet Explorer) your pc must be Java and cookie enabled. The downside to this is that the pc takes forever to start up! I just use firefox and am not tech savvy at all but just learning as I go!

For those of you new to blogging (same here), in order to post to the main body of the blog (bigger left hand side) you have to login at blogger.com assuming you have already been sent an invitation from the administrator. If not, never fear, just go to blogger.com and get yourself a username and pw and click on the Meow, Meow blog and happy typing. Otherwise, you can write a short message in the chat box but you cannot ramble like me!

Have a nice Sunday.

A Word (or 2) from the Blog Administrator (shamelessly self-appointed)

Hi Fellow School and Classmates!

Its great to see that quite a number of you are taking to Our Blog by checking up on it, registering as members so that you can post to it, commenting to the post and 'chatting' at the chat/message box. I can also see from the site counter that the blog had been browsed over 170 times since it was 'hastily' put up on Friday evening, Kuching time.

Since it was rather 'hastily' put up, please bear in mind the following:-

  • Although I'd volunteered to set up this blog; it is NOT my blog - it is OURS! Mine blog is here. So this is our domain and eventually will take on its 'character' and 'personality' based on all our inputs, postings and contributions.
  • I'm using FireFox 1.5 as my browser of choice. Those of you who are tech-savy would agree that in terms of speed and security, it is superior in everyway to Microsoft defacto Internet Explorer. But of course the choice is up to you. There are also other browsers around that are superior to I.E such as Opera or Safari if you are fortuately enough to be able to affford Apple Computers. The point of this is that this blog would appear 'normal' in virtually all the browsers EXCEPT Internet Explorer! *sigh* I'll get around to fix this page so that it would look normal in I.E.
  • I had already sent out invitations to most of you to join as members to this blog. I'll get around to sending it out to ALL. If you had not received your invitation yet, please bear with me while I sort this out. It would be a great help if you can email me directly at francish2o@gmail.com if you are not invited yet so that I can shoot off an invitation to you asap. Please accept my apologies for the delay. I owe you laksa and/or luicha!
  • For those of you who valued their privacy or simply need or prefer to stay private in the public domain; please feel free to use alias when you register. Just let us know by email who you are so that your name would not be indexed in google. For those of you who may be new to the internet(!); everything you typed in would be indexed! For example if you googled my name 'francis ho kuching'; you'll find everything that has ever been written about this character 'francis ho' in kuching on the internet! Good thing that I'm not on the run or harbouring any dark secrets ...
  • Please let us know what you think about the name, layout and design of this blog. Suggestions for areas that need improvements would be greatly appreciated.
  • I had added in a counter which display in real time the country that the person who is currently reading the blog is in. This is to alow you to know who is also online at the same time so that you can feel free to chat to him or her if you so wish. Some of us are already doing that! Eva was the first person who chatted with me. This being in the public domain, there is bound to be other visitors who do not 'belong' to the forum but may happen to chance on our blog. But thats cool.
  • Since this Our Blog, please feel free to experiment with your postings. Just go ahead and try posting - it would not 'crash' the blog. If something does goes wrong or if you need some help, please do not hesistate to call or email me. I'll see what I can do. But please bear in mind that I'm an architect not an IT or web expert.
I think that's it for the moment. I'll stop ranting now. So go ahead and post something!

Cheers!
Francis Ho

Hi Angela & everybody,

Seems like no contribution from Science 2, so have to do my part. Thus, last nite dig into my piles of old photos and surprise!! managed to find class photo for science 2. Then i have trouble as our office scanner is like grandfather era and all come out black (yah, its a black and white photo). So i have to 'beg' another colleague to scan for me - so now it is at least presentable lah ..

By the way i'm like Geok Lian where IT is concern, and luckily we hv very good IT support pple here so i can just call upon them if anything get jammed up around the office. At home, my PC is also grandma era and now on 'retirement' - that's why my daughters had to use the cyber-cafe to check Uni mails when they came back here!! So, now u know why i only write from office........

I'm not into the blog thing, but i'll support yr suggestion, Francis, . Then all the photos can be posted there, it's taking up too much mail space!! I got a return message from the mail router this morning that 'ngxo' mail box was too full so delivery failed.

From one of the query, i should be able to join for laksa unless the bigger bosses call for meeting, then i cannot 'ular' (that's 'liak-chua' in hokkien, for those who had being away for too long). OK bye and better get back to work .....

So , enjoy the photo and see if u can identify who's who.... I'm lost there, less than a handful that i can positively named.

Hello & Welcome to OUR BLOG!

Congratulations and a Warm Welcome to the Blog of the Class of '74!

This blog is set up to allow the 'class of 74 to keep in touch with each other from around the world and for us to share with each other snippets of our (wonderful) lives!

Everyone will in due course be sent an email invitation to register as a member of this blog to enable you to be able to post their entries here. A picture is worth a thousand words (or more) but please reduce the size to 640 x 480 or smaller before posting. It would be easier to post and faster for the page(s) to load. I understand that a number of you would be new to 'blogging' and it may take a little while for some of you to get up to speed. But the blogger platform that I had chosen is the easiest and most user friendly. We therefore look forward to your posting(s). If you have any difficulties, please feel free to email me and I can help with the postings. We are all smart monkeys and should be able to master this in no time. Nearing or having passed the half-century mark, we should be able to show those punks and our kids that the uncles and aunties can still swing with the best of 'em! Blogging or being 'cool' is not the exclusive domain of the young! We can kick butts too! But we'd better not!

Anyway I have the 'honour' and priviledge of posting our first entry here as I'd volunteered to set up this blog; as I felt the 'flying' emails were getting a little bit 'unwieldly' and I think that a blog is a more convenient and more organised way to manage the various postings. It is more readily accessible to anyone at anytime with acess to the internet.

So as the song goes - "let's get started in here!"

Cheers and be well!
