Wow! Belachan beehoon with jew-hoo. Only thing I can remember in belachan beehoon is eng-chai!

Anonymous said...

But there's no eng-chai.. ah well, must be something else that I'm thinking about!

you're thinking of jiu her eng chai. they have a funny way of doing that here in s'pore. you can find beansprouts, pickled cucmber and carrots together with the jiu her and eng chai. quite yummy though.

Yes that's it, deb. Do like that esp the rubbery jew hoo! We can get quite a lot of stuff here, but not that re-hydrated rubbery stuff.

Apa itu said...

That jew hoo is rehydrated with lye water which isn't very good for you in large quantities as it is the chemical base sodium hydroxide used for making soap etc. Read all about it in wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_hydroxide.
I still eat jew hoo eng chai when I go back though hoping they have wash away most of the lye water!

Isn't it lye water that they use in making the yellowy fresh noodles? Is it the stuff they call 'kee chui'?

Why are the stalls all closed. Was it at Chap Goh Mei.

Apa itu said...

yea EM, I think lye water is called kee chui.

GL, the stall holders must be off. My school mate who runs one of the belachan beehoon stall is off on Mondays & Tuesdays.

Francis Ho said...

Yes, most of stalls were closed because of chap goh mei.

I actually had the joo hoo eng chai while Phillip n Jack had the belacan beehoon.

Phillip asked one of the stall's helper to take the group photo.

em,
You can look forward to the tempting food in less than one month's time.
you must now plan your "eating" itineary... Day 1 -Laksa & kolomee,Day 2- jew hoo eng chai
Day 3 belachan bee hoon, Day 4- ABC & rojak....endless
Pity - no durian unless our fh2O can find some.
Am hopping against all hopes that I can make that short trip during that weekend.

GL, do make it. Will be fun. Will definitely have to make a list of food to eat, not just 1 a day. It will have to be a few a day! Will be in KL for a week. Any ideas on what should not be missed in KL/W.Msia? G has already stated that we must bring back mini spring rolls filled with pork floss inside, and what she calls 'red string' and my sis-in-law calls 'red ca-ching'.

What fruits are in season at the moment? Not very much probably. I'll settle for durian flowers which I haven't had ever since I left Kch all those years ago.

em, you mean you are coming all the way back to this corner of the earth and giving the little red dot a miss? How could you?

KL for one week!! What do you do there? Visiting relatives as well?

When in KL, you must eat the KL black noodles from the dirty shop (but now much brighter) in Petaling street. & Ampang leong tau hoo. But those in KL would have better comments than me!

Take one of those luxury coach to the little red dot. -I think quite cheap < MYR100.

You are right. Not much of the seasonal fruits during that time. Maybe 10cts can find you some durians!!

em said...

yes, got a brother there.

Deb, gl, how long does it take to go from kl to the little red dot? What's the train like and are there any toilets on the coaches? when travelling with a child one needs to know about toilets, esp if it's a girl. Boys no problem. A friend used to keep an empty bottle in his car for his son......and his wife kept a chamber pot in the boot for the daughter...

gl, what dirty shop? Has the shop got a name, or does one ask where the dirty shop is? "hee-leh la-sap tiam tee ta-lok?" OMG! Better get the hard hats out..

I just found out about Roti Tissue this weekend! A friend asked this man on the Indian stall in Oriental City whether he can make it and he said yes, and he made it. When she carried over to our table, those around must have wondered what on earth she had on the plate. Very nice too it was.

there are many coaches plying bet KL & S'pore. All have toilets. Some have entertainment, & light snacks serve. Someone told me they even have massage chairs!! Personally have not tried these but those who had swear that these coaches are a good & cheap alternative to flights & much much better than the slow train.
Now, you have a few contacts in KL including 10cts so contact them there for a reunion. Pity I am so busy here (now in Jakarta & lots of work to catch up in Singapore next week).
The dirty looking corner shop in Petaling street is somewhere opposite Hong Leong Bank if I am not mistaken. When you go to China town, you will not miss it.

I am behind in reading our Blog. Sorry to comment this so late. It is terrific to see Jack (Chin Seng) in the photo with some of my ex-classmates. Jack, you look great, still with full crown of black hair and so trim! I am balding and turning grey..aging gracefully I intend. Just this week my company sent me to a two days seminar on preparing to live the next lap of my life..the after 50! It is called 'Silver Connection'. Prgram teaches those turning 50 to prepare for retirement, to do financial planning (bit late, should have taught me when 25), maintain healthy, and to age gracefully. Finally I accept the fact that I am entering the my 50s...this April I will be 51! smile... I will call you Jack when in KL.
