This was the 4th/5th forms building during our time . It sure look differnt now . I remember there was bell on the top floor of that building . wasn't Francis the "bell monitor" ? We used to have morning assembly where the flower garden is in the picture . One time we had a bon fire there and the someone rang the fire station to say the school was on fire . Just as well it was all legit (the principal was there) or else we would be in big trouble !!
The library was on the building on the right (looking at the picture) .That reminds me that during the 5th form biology practical exam the first batch was doing there exam just opposite the library . We being on the second batch went up to the library trying to look at what the first batch was doing . Someone reported that he saw a long skiny white thing . We work out that it must be some kind of worm(ring worm) so we all swatted for it . I would have scored high in that test ... unfortunately it was a bean sprout that they were disecting !!

I'd always had this nagging suspicion that I was chosen to be the 'bell monitor' on account of my height and hence reach and nothing else! *sigh* ;)

Aha! I see where the library is.

Now it's all coming out! Who that bell monitor is, who shares his durians with squirrels. Hee...hee...hee.

Not being a true blue Thomian having spent only 2 years there, it's good to learn the history now.

Is it also true that one of you boys (not naming names, relax - he's not a contributor to the blog) was dancing with a broom stick? LOL! :)

Hi! Anon. Interesting how the photo was found in this website of corpun about corporal punishment! Wonder who posted it there? Maybe the author was writing something about school corporal punishment like caning by our principal? Certainly I have heard of caning by Tiger Song who prowled silently on the school ground and could be standing behind a class to catch students who were speaking or inattentive in classroom..Yet this strict discipline was good for the school, don't you agree?

Apa itu said...

Yes, here's the article about school discipline - http://www.corpun.com/mys00402.htm

Who's Tiger Song that we didn't get to meet? A past principal? Any relation of Edmund or Anthony?

Ok, ok, found answer to my own question liaow from the chat box. ES is the nephew of Tiger Song.

Anon, Tiger Song was the nickname the students in our era gave to the vice principal Mr Song Thian Eng. Actually he is a good soul, strict but fair to all. He kept the discipline of the school in check and for that many of us did not become hobos! When I was in primary six, I won a school raffle. Must have been the fourth or fifth prize. It was an automatic Citizen watch that worked by motion. I had to collect the prize from the Principal's office in the Secondary school. To us primary kids, the secondary school up the hill was like an elite institution on a pedestal and stories of the prowling Tiger sent the chill down our spine. I think it was Rodney (if I am not wrong) who accompanied me up the 'heavenly steps' to see Mr Song to claim my prize. Btw, that watch served me very well during secondary school days and all the way to university time too. I still have it in my drawer. It works but it does not keep correct time anymore: it has aged! For its sentimental value, I have not the heart to discard it. You see, my mum bought the raffle ticket that won it.

I see. And Song Thian Cheok is the brother of Tiger Song, thedtan?

thedtan said...

mmm Must ask Anthony Song this question. Thian Eng or Thian Cheok are either brothers or cousins. Francis Ho, if you see this can you enlighten us if you know or ask Anthony Song? In April, when I was home for my eldest brother's funeral, I met some old friends and I was told that Tiger Song is still keeping well!

thedtan - i'm happy to report that as far as i know d tiger is still kicking n alive!

as regards Anthony Song; lets just say that he pretty much prefer his own immediate family's company to anything else!

Edmund Song should be able to shed some light on this matter. yes?

Oops! Why do I always mix up the two fellows? I meant Edmund Song not Anthony Song. The latter is a shadow of the past but I can still remember his brother, Richard Song, who taught us English in Form one. Can you recall as well that he introduced us the magnificent book 'The Culture Shock'by Alvin Toffler? Kenneth Tan gave me a copy of it and it is still with me, blessed him! Hey Kenneth, where are you and if you read this, do contact with us. I would love to hear from you.

Richard Song, big brother of Anthony, blessed his heart, taught us literature in Lower 6. Unfortunately, I dropped the course as I was no good at the subject. We said farewell to RS when he left us to take up a principal's post in Canada. Still remember him telling us about the secular world. Wonder where he is now.

We'll be lucky if we hear anything from Kenneth. The last a few of us saw him was in Birmingham and we got the feeling he thought we were aliens.

I remember Richard Song , didn't he teach us GP in Form six ? A few of us used to play rugby with Kenneth .... actually he was teaching us rugby as he mix with a lot of kiwi/aussie in the military barrack ( I think his father is in the military ?) Isn't Anthony Song in one of the picture in this blog somewhere ? He looks a bit like Tiger Song (physically) ... don't you think

My apology. It's the aging process.. This morning I thought I made a mistake about Richard Song being our English teacher in Form one. No, the English teacher then was Mrs Diam, who was big in size and tall. I remembered she called me 'Teckoo' and I enjoyed her class especially the comprehension exercises. There was a comprehension passage taken from Agatha Christie's book "The Murder of Roger Ackroyd" which introduced me to this book (kindly lent to me by Yian Kwan's sister). To this day I love Agatha's novels and I think I have read most of her writings. I still keep a collection of her books on my shelf. I must correct my error in my previous comment: Richard Song taught us General Paper in lower six and selected the book "The Culture Shock" for our reading.

Ok everyone... all the Song Thians' are brothers... eleven of them... my late father was the youngest... only Thain Eng (the tiger) is atill living
and all the Song Swees' are cousins... only Anthony's side changed names to prefix Song Cheoks' but they are bona fide half-cousins.

Song Kheng Hai (4 wives) was our grandfather who donated the Song Kheng Hai grounds to the municipal.

Thanks Edmund for elucidating the Song riddle. Now I have a better picture of who Thian Eng is. Just curious, in the eleven brothers where does he stand? Middle in line? I did not know he was your uncle till now!

Hi Edward,

Ever wondered why I (and my 2 brothers as well) never get sent to see him or 'spanked'... I was talkative as well.... but then again he only picked the last one who was still (unaware) talking after he stood there a long, long time...... like a tiger watching his prey

He's number 10 in the line of brothers.

Ya..come to think of it. Now the truth is out of the horse's mouth. Not too late to launch a report to the Ministry of Education. This blog has the proof!!

It is appropriate here to post a tribute to Mr Song Thian Eng, our old school vice principal. I do feel sad to learn of his departure. Odd that we should be thinking of him these past few weeks in our Blog. I for one have a respect for him and as I had written above, he was a school disciplinarian with a caring heart for the students. His bark was worse than his bite, so to speak. May he rest in peace..

thedtan, I thought ES said Tiger Song is the only one still living (see 4 comments above) or am I behind time?!
